Declared to be Prabowo's vice presidential candidate, Gibran confirms he is still a PDI-P cadre

The Surakarta City Gerindra Branch Leadership Council declared support for the Mayor of Surakarta, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to become Prabowo Subianto's vice presidential candidate. However, Gibran said he did not know anything about this support.

The declaration was made by the management of the Gerindra Surakarta City Branch Leadership Council (DPC), Tuesday (10/10/2023) evening. The decision was obtained after several board meetings.

This attitude was expressed as approaching the internal consolidation of Gerindra throughout Central Java. Held on Sunday (15/10/2023), the event will be attended by Prabowo.

In the near future, other Gerindra DPCs also made similar declarations. Some of them are from Sukoharjo, Sragen, Boyolali and Karanganyar. The Gerindra Central Java Regional Leadership Council also provided the same support.

"If (support) appears from various regions, perhaps many people want it, especially in Central Java," said Chairman of the Gerindra DPC for Surakarta City, Ardianto Kuswinarno, when contacted, Wednesday (11/10/2023).

Gerindra has widely considered Gibran's name to accompany Prabowo in the 2024 presidential election. However, Ardianto claims that this declaration was without instructions from party officials at the central level. Support for Gibran is part of the aspirations of cadres and party wing organizations in Surakarta.

Ardianto said that Gibran was a young politician who succeeded in building the city of Surakarta in the first period of his leadership. This will combine well with Prabowo's maturity as a senior politician. His party rejected the charge of pragmatism regarding support for Gibran, President Jokowi's eldest son.

"We just think Mas Gibran is a visionary. His electability comes from him alone. "If there is an outpouring of votes from Mr. (Jokowi's) volunteers, we will be very grateful," said Ardianto.

When met separately, Gibran did not know about plans to declare support for him. The declaration, he said, was an activity of another party, not PDI-Perjuangan.

He also emphasized that he was still part of the PDI-Perjuangan. Moreover, he is currently focused on carrying out his duties as Mayor of Surakarta.

Gibran conveyed that the support given to him was not only as vice presidential candidate. He said that there was various other support, such as remaining as mayor and governor, both in Central Java and DKI Jakarta. It's just that he received these supports as citizens' aspirations.

“Volunteers (want) to be like that. Citizens like that. Some people want this, some people want that. We first accommodate all input from volunteers, residents and other parties. "Yes, everything is accommodated," said Gibran.

Apart from that, the obstacle to Gibran being nominated as vice presidential candidate is his age. According to the regulations, the minimum age limit for nominated candidates is 40 years. In fact, Gibran is now only 36 years old.

However, a number of parties are challenging the age limit regulation through the Constitutional Court. It is estimated that the decision on the lawsuit will be announced next week.

However, Gibran stated that he did not follow the progress of the lawsuit. He asked not to always be linked to the issue of cawapres candidacy.

"I didn't follow him. Please focus on the plaintiff. Don't do it all on me. That's the person suing Mr. Emil Dardak. Who knows, he might want to be vice presidential candidate," said Gibran.
